AWARDS, HONORS, TRANSITIONS
  • Jeni Mahoney was selected as a 2016 playwriting fellow at Company One in Boston.
  • Randy Reinholz, co-founder and producing artistic director of Native Voices, is named Resident Theater at La Jolla Playhouse! Read more here.
  • Intiman Theatre has named NTC member, director and University of Washington drama professor Valerie Curtis-Newton to co-curate the company’s 2016 season with producing artistic director Andrew Russell. Read more about it HERE.
  • NTC member and Quantum Theatre founding artistic director Karla Boos wins Carol Brown Established Artist Award in Pittsburgh.
  • NTC Vice President  Michael Hood, honored as an American Theatre Fellow by The College of Fellows of the American Theatre.
  • The Denver Center for the Performing Arts production of NTC member Robert Schenkkan’s The 12 received Colorado Theatre Guild 2015 Henry Award in the Best Original Production category.  

PRODUCTIONS, EVENTS, ACTIVITIES
  • Risa Brainin will be working on a new play by Idris Goodwin called We Want the Funk, a rustbelt lullaby on the one! through UCSB's LAUNCH PAD program. LAUNCH PAD is the subject of a film by documentarian Chris Jenkins and 16 UCSB students that was screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 12th and 13th. The film features some great writers including NTC's own James Still.
  • Deborah Brevoort’s THE BLUE-SKY BOYS is currently in production at Capital Rep in Albany NY: March 11-April 3, 2016. For tickets: http://capitalrep.org/
  • EMBEDDED, an opera inspired by Edgar Allan Poe with a libretto by Deborah Brevoort will be produced at the Ft. Worth Opera from April 24-May 7, 2016. For tickets:  http://www.fwopera.org/
  • Dan Carter reports that Blood at the Root by Dominique Morisseau was commissioned by the Penn State School of Theatre. The Penn State production played internationally at the Grahamstown Arts Festival in South Africa, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the Adelaide Arts Festival in Australia, picking up awards at each stop. In April, it will perform in New York, co-presented by Hi-Arts and the National Black Theatre. In December, Penn State served as co-producers of Classical Theatre of Harlem’s The First Noel, presented at the Apollo Theatre.
  • Produced by Sherry Eaker and directed by Shellen Lubin, the 2016 Bistro Awards took place on March 8th at Gotham Comedy Club in New York. Find out more about this event and check out the Red Carpet photos for this event HERE.
  • Angelina Fiordellisi commissioned Israel Horovitz to write a play, OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES, which will have its world premier in June. The play, which features Estelle Parsons, Judy Ivey and Angelina herself, has already received a workshop at the Westport Country Playhouse and a reading at Cherry Lane. 
  •  David Fuller played Fredrik A Little Night Music with Theater 2020 in Brooklyn Heights. His wife and partner, Judith Jarosz served as Director/Choreographer. Their stellar cast included Broadway veterans and some recent college grads. Read a great review in the Huffington Post HERE.

  • Beth Lincks (a.k.a Arleen Hutton) SEE ROCK CITY was recently produced at the Rubicon in Ventura, CA. Read a wonderful review of the production here.
  • Jeni Mahoney directed developmental workshops of WAR STORIES by Richard Dresser and ESCORTING TOM by Duane Kelly at Key City Theater's PTPlayFest20 in Port Townsend, WA where she also led a panel on Playwriting (The Kernel of an Idea) and an Insta-Play writing event.
  • Jeni Mahoney's play CHUCK ROAST TOAST will be presented at the 2016 Boston Theater Marathon on May 8..
  • Alma Martinez, MFA, PhD, was inducted into the Actors Branch of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. As an actor, she appears in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Darkness with Kevin Bacon and the new Oprah Winfrey/Ava DuVarney television series Queen Sugar. She is currently Artist-In-Residence in the Theatre Arts Department at the University of La Verne in La Verne, CA.
  • Charles Morey’s new play The Salamander’s Tale enjoyed a terrific, well attended staged reading in February at the 13th Street Repertory Theatre in New York City. The play is “an intense and suspenseful new play about faith, fact, forgery and murder. Based on the true story of Mark Hofmann and the Mormon Church.”  
  •  Jim O'Connor directed APPROPRIATE by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins atTrustus Theatre. The cast featured NTC member Erica Tobolski. Read a review HERE. 
  • Native Voices, Producing Artistic Director Randy Reinholz, Producing Executive Director Jean Bruce Scott is presenting THEY DON'T TALK BACK thru March 20, directed by Randy Reinholz.
  • ROPES, written by Barbara Colio, translated by Maria Alexandria Beech and directed by Lisa Rothe  is currently making its American Premiere at Two River Theater (TRT) through March 20th. Watch the trailerhere.
  • Productions of ALL THE WAY by Robert Schenkkan are currently running at the Asolo, Denver Theater Center, and Alley Theater, and scheduled later in the year for the Dallas Theater Center and Arena Stage. Robert participated in the Summit Theater Festival and is writing a new play on commission for the Denver Theater Center. His newest children's play, SHADOWPLAY, will be part of the 2016 New Visions, New Voices festival at the Kennedy Center.
  • Caridad Svich's agua de luna (psalms for the rouge) premiered at Matrix Theatre in Detroit under Sherrine Azab's direction on February 26 and runs until March 20, 2016.
  • Caridad Svich's The Breath of Stars premiered at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI under Neil Scharnick's direction on March 4, 2016. The production was live streamed on Howlround. Watch it HERE.
  • Elizabeth Van Dyke & Kaia Calhoun direct Untamed: Hair Body Attitude, short plays by Jocelyn Bioh, Chisa Hutchinson, Lenelle Moïse, Nikkole Salter, & Cori Thomas. March 24-28. Tkts and Info here.
  • That Wonder Boy, directed by NTC President Risa Brainin, was recently presented as a part of the United Solo Festival in New York City.
  • My Lord, What a Night by NTC Board Member Deborah Brevoort was presented by Premiere Stages as a part of their Liberty Live partnership with Liberty Hall Museum.
  • Ybor City, book by NTC Board Member Anita Gonzalez and Music and lyrics by Dan Furman, directed Lorca Peress, and presented August 21 at the Strasberg Institute.

  • Jim Volz has signed on as a Series Editor for Methuen Drama in London with plans for a seven-book “Introduction” to various areas of theatre including Scene Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design and Writing for the Theatre. Denver Center Theatre Producing Artistic Director Kent Thompson has already been signed for a new book on Directing/Artistic Direction, Los Angeles’ production manager and stage manager has signed on for a new Introduction to Stage Management and Volz is authoring a new Arts Administration book.
