NTC: Proposed Code Changes
Proposed Code Changes: The Code changes authorized by the membership last year have been posted to the website.

In addition, the Board of Directors, in their retreat earlier this year, has recommended one further change to the code. (See below) We propose that the National Theatre Conference Scholarship Award be renamed the National Theatre Conference Emerging Professional Award. As you will remember, this $1,000 Award is presented each year to a person demonstrating exemplary promise in a professional theatre organization. The recipient of the National Theatre Conference Outstanding Theatre Award selects the recipient of this award. Since there is no stipulation that this award be given to a student, or that its use be confined to academic purposes, and since many if not most of those who receive the award can be expected to be young professionals at an early stage of their careers, the Board has reasoned that the word scholarship is no longer descriptive for this award.

Since the award is defined within our Code of Regulations (Article VII, Sections 1 and 2) we are required to make this recommendation known to the membership for its approval. After thirty days, unless the majority of those responding are against the proposed change, the proposal will be incorporated into the Code. This change will be discussed at the NTC Business Meeting, Sunday, December 4. Please respond via email to Michael Hood, NTC Secretary, at mhood@iup.edu Please note whether you APPROVE or DISAPPROVE the change. Thank you.

ARTICLE VII: AWARDS

Section 1 - National Theatre Conference Outstanding Theatre

Award: This $1,000 Award is presented at the annual membership meeting to recognize outstanding achievement by a not-for-profit theatre. The current President shall appoint a Committee and Chair to recommend candidates for the Award. The committee chair will submit ranked recommendations to the Board of Directors for discussion. After such discussion, the President will select the Award recipient. The President will ask the theatre's producer, artistic director, or managing director to attend the annual membership meeting at the Conference's expense to receive the Award, talk about the work of the theatre, and announce the recipient of the National Theatre Conference Scholarship Emerging Professional Award.

Section 2 - National Theatre Conference Scholarship Emerging Professional Award:

This $1,000 Award is presented each year to a person demonstrating exemplary promise in a professional theatre organization. The designated recipient of this Award shall be selected by the recipient of the National Theatre Conference Outstanding Theatre Award. The Award will be presented at the annual membership meeting.

As you will have noted, Board recommended code changes are subject to a 30-day review period, at the end of which they are adopted, unless a majority of the membership has disapproved. Members who wish to register their disapproval may do so by contacting Michael Hood, Secretary, at mhood@iup.edu

2011 National Theatre Conference Meeting
The online information and form you will access by clicking the "Register Now" link below will allow you to make reservations for yourself and any guests who you will be bringing to the 2011 meeting. As you can see, for the second year we are using the online registration process offered by Constant Contact that makes it easier for you to register and for us to manage that information.

Be sure to indicate if you will or will not be attending specific events that include food. We need this information to pass on to the caterer who charges by the person. There are also places to indicate your meal choices for the luncheon. Be sure to indicate the names of the guests you will be bringing to the luncheon so we can have name tags made for them. The registration is due by November 15, 2011.

We will once again gather at The Players on Friday morning to greet our new members (our largest class in some time). After lunch, we'll reassemble at the Baruch Center for our afternoon to hear from and interact with some exciting guests.

On Saturday, we'll celebrate the following at our annual awards luncheon:

Person of the Year: Emily Mann
Outstanding Theatre: Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Stavis Award: The Convert by Danai Gurira
Paul Green Award recipient: May Adrales

Details of the panels are just about complete and we'll be sending that information to you shortly.

So, complete the online reservation form (by clicking "Register Now") or let us know you will not be attending this year's conference (by clicking "I Can't Make It").

Initiative Announcement
NATIONAL THEATRE CONFERENCE
Announces Its
NATIONAL INITIATIVE TO CELEBRATE AMERICAN WOMEN PLAYWRIGHTS

We at the NTC believe there are currently an extraordinary number of playwrights working in America. We recognize however, that production opportunities are becoming more difficult to find for all playwrights, and that Women Writers especially face even greater challenges in getting produced. Accordingly, we would like to announce a new National initiative and urge all our members who are affiliated with producing entities, be they professional or non-professional, to join together and pledge the following:

For the next three years, we will dedicate at least one production slot per year to a Contemporary Female American Playwright.

1. This will be a full production in line with what you normally do. Not a reading. Not a workshop.
2. Even though current financial conditions are daunting, we encourage all members to make a residency available to their writer during their production.
3. This need not be a World Premier. It can be, if you so chose, but most writers will tell you what they really need is that critical second or third production that really allows them to finish their play.
4. This need not be a "New Emerging Writer". Again, it can be, if you so choose but it can also be the work of a mid-career dramatist, or a mature writer. There are lots of writers out there who were once (and ever so briefly) the "new writer." They haven't gone away, they've just gotten better. They need productions, too.
5. The only other stipulation is that it cannot be a play which has had a Broadway production in the last five years. Those plays are already being done. Let's spread the wealth around!

We ask that those of you participating insert the following statement in your playbill for each play produced as part of this initiative:

"This production is part of the NTC National Initiative to Celebrate American Women Playwrights. The National Theatre Conference (NTC) founded in 1925, encourages and supports the American Theatre through its initiatives, awards, and colloquy. For more information, see www.nationaltheatreconference.com."

Please inform us of your intent to participate as soon as possible but no later then January 31, 2011, with updates as to playwrights, plays, dates, etc., as soon as they can be made public.
