Sue Lawless has directed on Broadway,
off-Broadway, and around the country. Her career has included
direction of more than 500 professional plays, musicals, and
operas at such prestigious theatres as Brooklyn Academy of
Music, Goodspeed Opera House, Opera McGill, Walnut Street
Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Cleveland Playhouse,
George Street Playhouse, Papermill Playhouse. La Mama ETC, and
the NYC Fringe Festivals. She earned a Drama Desk Best
Musical Director Nomination for her off-Broadway production of In Gay Company and
has directed such luminaries as Richard Kiley, Colleen
Dewhurst, Zoe Caldwell, Patricia Neal and Larry Kert.
Guest faculty includes teaching acting at
McGill University in Montreal; comedy at the Tisch School NYU,
and guest direction at the University of Virginia, Mt. Holyoke
College, Penn State, and the University of Illinois.
Lawless is Secretary of the Stage
Directors and Choreographers Executive Board. She has served on
the Opera/Musical Theatre Panel of the National Endowment for
the Arts. Proudly she has worked under every one of the SSDC
contracts and has been a member of all performing unions
including AGVA.
In her early years in the theatre, she was
part of the LORT company at the fabled Washington Theatre Club
in DC and an active actress/comic in NYC. Yes, she has
appeared on the Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show with
her partner, Ted Pugh.
