Ted Herstand began his theatre career as a
professional actor playing child and juvenile roles at the
Cleveland Play House. For more than a decade, he appeared
in numerous roles on stage, radio, television, and in motion
pictures in both Cleveland and New York. He then earned a
BA in acting/directing, an MA in playwriting, and a PhD in
theatre aesthetics. His acting, directing, playwriting,
teaching, and workshops have taken him to many places around
the country – north, south, east, and west. He has
directed over seventy productions and appeared as an actor
hundreds of times. His playwriting has brought him
regional and national awards and productions in professional,
community, and academic theatre. In addition to his work
as director, actor, and playwright, Ted Herstand’s career
has included: the training of actors for the Minnesota Theatre
Company of the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre during the tenures of Sir
Tyrone Guthrie, Douglas Campbell, and Edward Payson Call; the
chairmanship of Drama Department at Case Western Reserve
University where he reestablished and directed a joint MFA
program with the Cleveland Play House; and service as Director
of the School of Drama at the University of Oklahoma. He
was elected to membership in the National Theatre Conference in
1971, and was named a Fellow of the American Theatre College of
Fellows in 2004. Ted and his wife, Jo, live in South
Burlington, Vermont.
