Eric Fielding is the professor of scenic
design and resident set designer for the department of theatre
and media arts at Brigham Young University. A 30-year member of
the United Scenic Artists 829 professional designers’
union, his freelance design credits include productions for
Utah Opera, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Tuacahn, Pioneer Theatre
Company, Salt Lake Repertory Theatre, Colorado Shakespeare
Festival, Denver Center Theatre Company, Sundance Theatre, and
Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. He is a trustee of the National
Theatre Conference; a fellow and former vice-president of
USITT, the American association of design, production, and
technology professionals in the performing arts and
entertainment industry; and former commissioner of publications
and communications for OISTAT, the international organizations
of scenographers, technicians, and architects of theatre. He
was editor and design director for Theatre
Design & Technology journal
from 1988-95. He served as designer for the American exhibit at
the 1991 Prague Quadrennial, the major international exhibition
of theatrical scenic and costume design, winning a gold medal
for “Mozart in America” that featured opera designs
from throughout the country. He recently served as the creator
and director of World Stage Design, a new international theatre
design exhibition mounted in Toronto during March 2005 and
scheduled for Seoul, Korea, in 2009.
